How to Land Your First Singing Gig in the USA

Breaking into the US live circuit is less about luck and more about showing up where bookers can hear you. Even with TikTok and YouTube, gig-runners still scout the room — every weekend, in every city.

Start with open mics — but pick the right ones

Every major city has 3–4 open mics that actually matter. In Nashville it's the Bluebird; in New York, Sidewalk Café; in Los Angeles, The Mint. Show up early, sign up, perform two of your strongest originals, then stay until the end. Bookers leave early when nobody talks to them.

Avoid generic bar mics where the audience is half-listening. Quality of room > stage time.

Build a press kit — even before your first paid show

Send a one-page PDF with a high-res photo, three minute-long performance clips, contact info, and a one-sentence story. Tucked in your back pocket at every gig, this is what turns an admiring stranger into a venue's calendar slot.

Get on event boards

GigSalad, The Bash, and Sonicbids still drive real bookings — weddings, corporate events, private parties. The pay is better than bars and the audiences are more receptive. Set up a profile, upload three clips, respond within an hour. Speed wins.

And finally — get on platforms like Underdog Idols

Online competitions are the new audition tape. Every video you submit is shown to record labels actively scouting fresh voices. One video can outpace a year of bar gigs.
